The Hidden Truth About Picking: Why the Dirtiest Spots Hold the Best Treasures
Most people—especially beginners—would have walked away from that house the moment they stepped inside. The overwhelming stench, the layers of dust, and the creepy-crawly pests would have sent them running. But here’s what separates an average picker from a great one: the best finds are often buried in the worst conditions.
Think about it. If a place looks too rough to bother with, chances are most other pickers have already skipped it. That means fewer eyes have searched through the mess, leaving incredible treasures hidden in plain sight, just waiting for the right person to uncover them.
The Jackpot Find: PACE Super “8” Slot Machine
As I dug through old furniture, piles of newspapers, and broken appliances, I spotted something metallic and dusty in the corner, and there it was—a PACE Super “8” slot machine.
For those who don’t know, PACE Manufacturing was one of the most iconic slot machine makers of the early 20th century. Their machines were built like tanks, often found in old casinos, bars, and speakeasies. The Super “8” model is a rare gem, a beautifully crafted piece of history.
The best part? The owner said, “Take it for $15. I just want it gone.”
Fifteen bucks. FIFTEEN. BUCKS.
I handed over the cash faster than a Vegas high roller on a losing streak.
Buffalo Nickels & Hidden Value
When I got home, I carefully opened the machine—and boom, my jaw hit the floor. The machine was stuffed with Buffalo nickels! Hundreds of them.
For those not in the know, Buffalo nickels were minted from 1913 to 1938. While some are just worth face value, others can be worth hundreds or even thousands of dollars depending on the year and condition.
Now, let’s talk value:
🔹 A working PACE Super “8” slot machine can fetch anywhere from $1,500 to $3,000 depending on condition.
🔹 The Buffalo nickels alone could easily add a few hundred more to my total haul.
🔹 That means my $15 Facebook Find could be worth over $3,000.
Not a bad return on investment, huh?
